Hand held plate compactors are lifted by their long handle and released to pound their plate head against loose material. They flatten and compress underlying surfaces before pouring concrete, placing rebar, laying pavers, and performing other site preparation tasks. They also tamp down asphalt and firm up fill after cable trenching, laying pipe, and installing utility poles, street lights, and fire hydrants.
